Osteoarthritis Q&A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is joint inflammation. Joints form the connection between two or more bones and are responsible for your body’s mobility and flexibility. Joint inflammation causes pain and swelling that may interfere with joint mobility.

For many people, arthritis worsens over time, leading to disability that affects their quality of life.

There are more than 100 conditions that cause arthritis; each may require different treatments. The team at Louisiana Pain Specialists provides individualized care for arthritis, creating plans for the best results.

What are the types of arthritis?

Though numerous conditions cause arthritis, there are types of arthritis that are more common than others. These include:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative type of arthritis. It develops when the cartilage that cushions the end of your bones wears away over time.

Osteoarthritis causes joint pain and stiffness that may be worse when you first wake up in the morning. You may also feel a grating sensation when you move your joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. Joint inflammation occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the lining of your joint.

With rheumatoid arthritis, you may have joint pain, swelling, and tenderness that lasts six or more weeks. Your joints may also be stiff during the first 30 minutes after you wake up in the morning.

Rheumatoid arthritis typically involves more than one joint, affecting the smaller joints in the hands and feet first.

Infectious arthritis

With infectious arthritis, you may have a fever and chills along with your joint inflammation.

What are the treatments for arthritis?

The experts at Louisiana Pain Specialists customize treatment for arthritis based on its type, the severity of symptoms, and degree of joint damage. Treatment may include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • At-home exercise program
  • Weight loss
  • Corticosteroids
  • Joint injections
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing or splinting

The team works closely with you, designing a plan to reduce your arthritis symptoms and prevent or delay the progression of your condition.

When pain management treatments no longer provide significant relief, the team may refer you to a surgeon to discuss surgical options like joint replacement.
